My very first attempt at online dance classes was when I came across the dance guru, Matt Steffanina, who frequently posted dance tutorials on his Youtube page. In addition to learning the routine, there was trying to figure out directions, pausing and rewinding a number of times, fighting distractions from anywhere and everywhere...it was all so foreign for someone who had only taken physical classes up until then. Fast forward to 2020 when the pandemic forced us to go virtual, meaning we had to hack online dance classes, and then to last month when curfew got lifted, meaning physical classes got back in session, and finally to now, where we are spoilt for choice, meaning we have both options at our disposal. So the question begs dancer friend, online dance classes or physical dance classes? Welcome to post number 10!
Physical dance classes are the most popular kind. They are what most of us, if not all of us dancers, like to attend. These classes ensure you are present, they allow for human connection, and most importantly they create space for the most accurate feedback from you instructor due to proximity. Physical dance classes are perfect for those who dance to escape/recharge, because they get to be in a different space for an hour or two, and they are also perfect for dancers in training who require hands-on correction and guidance.
Online dance classes have become popular due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Over the months, instructors have found ways to effectively teach dance classes via Zoom, Youtube tutorials, Instagram and Facebook lives, and personal apps. These classes have great advantages including the flexibility of location, the flexibility of time, and most importantly the accessibility of receiving training from instructors abroad, regardless of where you are. These classes are perfect for dancers who travel a lot and would like to train on the go, for dancers who would like guidance from instructors abroad without actually travelling, and for dancers who would like to train from the comfort of their home.
Like we always say, there is no right or wrong way to take classes. In one season of your life, physical classes may work best, while in another, online classes may be the perfect fit for you. As long as you are dancing, everything else is a matter of preference. So dancer friends, for the season you are currently in, what is your pick? Physical dance classes or online dance classes?
Keep creating & sharing!
