I remember being so excited when I found out that I could take dance classes, regularly! Being able to say "I am going to dance class" was so fascinating for me. I immediately got into group classes and then went into private classes later on. I enjoyed being able to dance with my friends in the group classes, while I learnt to go for private classes when I had a specific goal in mind. Though they were both effective, they had their pros and cons, just like everything else in life. Welcome to post number 9!
Group classes are fun and full of energy! You get a sense of community and are able to ease into the classes without a lot of pressure. These classes are not only great for beginners, who would like to be around people in the same position, but also for more advanced dancers who would like some healthy competition.
On the other hand, there are higher chances of comparison in group classes, be it from the teacher, the other students, or yourself. This can jeopardize your personal growth, as a dancer, if you let it become your main focus.
Private classes are personal, intentional, and tailor made for the student. These are great for dancers who want to go at their own pace and would like one on one instruction. If you have a certain goal to meet, work best alone, or get easily distracted by others, this would be your ideal option.
On the contrary, private classes can be quite intimidating. There's no room to hide behind another dancer and this can be quite scary, especially if you are just beginning. You need to be ready for the teacher's full attention and use it to your advantage, as opposed to letting it scare you.
Like I mentioned earlier, dance classes are effective regardless of how you decide to take them. What works for you in one season of your life might not work for you in the next. Try taking a group class and a private class, and see what atmosphere you enjoy best. There is no right or wrong way to take dance classes, as long as you enjoy yourself.
Keep creating & sharing!
